Case Study – Vivergo, Hull

Project: Vivergo, Hull
Works: Error Free Piling Setting Out
Area: Hull
Project Value: £180k

Vivergo Fuels was formed in 2007 as a joint venture between BP, British Sugar and Dupont. The business was set up to help deliver a significant portion of the UK’s forecast biofuel demand once fully operational in late spring of 2012. Vivergo intended the expansion of its Hull plant to accommodate the growing demand for Biofuels in the UK and overseas.

Objectives

Vertical Survey Systems’ engineers were commissioned by the main contractor to undertake the setting out of over 7,500 piles.

Progress and Outcome

Our engineers on site were emailed files containing the co-ordinates of the piles, which had been extracted from the client’s drawings by Vertical Survey Systems’ CAD team. They were then able to upload these files to their instruments using an external data card and begin setting out immediately. Because there was no need to input the pile co-ordinates manually, the possibility of human error was dramatically reduced. In fact, given the huge number of piles being set out each day day, it would have been nigh on impossible to stay ahead of schedule if our engineers had had to rely on manual input – not to mention the delays or cost implications of any errors.

Our operatives surveyed the As Built locations of all the piles, forwarding the information back to the office for processing on a daily basis. By maintaining and uploading a daily report, the client was able to review site progress remotely. This also allowed instant notification of pile position anomalies – eg, due to kick-offs caused by below ground obstructions – and consider foundation design changes accordingly. The project was ultimately handed over with a full QA report manual, with a 100% accuracy rating maintained.
